Quick answer

Split AC Repair: the short version

3 key points
  • Oahu electricity runs about 43¢ per kWh, 2.3× the U.S. average. A new 12,000 BTU inverter split used 8 hours a day costs about $62 a month; an older unit of the same size draws about twice as much, about $124 a month.
  • Hawaii Energy pays $75 per condenser, up to 2 a year, for a multi-point AC tune-up by a Clean Energy Ally contractor.
  • Hawaii Energy instant rebate: $400-$550 per outdoor unit (condenser) on a qualifying split AC or mini-split, set by size and efficiency and taken off the invoice. A 9,000 or 12,000 BTU unit earns $450 if it is rated 17.2 SEER2 or better, and nothing below that. The work must be done by a Hawaii Energy Clean Energy Ally contractor.

Split AC repair on Oahu for every common setup

Ductless split AC is the most common type of air conditioning in Oahu homes, especially in houses built for the trade winds with no ductwork. When a mini-split acts up, it usually tells you: a blinking light, a code on the display, water where it should not be, or a new sound.

Universal Air Hawaii repairs split AC and mini-split systems across Oahu, from Ewa Beach and Mililani to Honolulu, Kailua and Kaneohe. We work on wall-mounted heads, ceiling cassettes, slim ducted units, floor consoles and multi-zone systems. For central, window or other systems, see our general AC repair page.

Split AC blinking lights and error codes

Mini-splits run self-diagnostics and report faults in a few ways, depending on the brand family. Some flash the operation or timer lamp a set number of times. Others show a letter-and-number code on a small display on the indoor head. Many let you pull the most recent fault code through a check or self-diagnosis function on the remote or wired controller.

Codes are a useful starting point, but they point to a circuit or a sensor, not always the failed part. The same code can mean a bad sensor, a loose wire, a failing board or a real refrigerant problem. Codes also differ between brands and even model years, which is why we diagnose instead of guessing from a chart online.

What to do when your split AC starts blinking

Write down or video the blink pattern or code. Turn the system off, switch off its breaker for a few minutes, then turn it back on. If the unit restarts and runs normally, keep an eye on it. If the blinking returns, leave it off and book a repair. Do not keep power-cycling a system that keeps faulting, since repeated restarts can stress the compressor.

Split AC leaking water from the indoor unit

Water dripping from the head or running down the wall is one of the most common split AC calls on Oahu, and the humidity is a big reason why. Your mini-split pulls a lot of water out of the air, and that water has to drain away cleanly. Here is what usually goes wrong:

  • Clogged condensate line: Algae and slime grow fast in warm, humid drain lines, especially in Windward homes. When the line clogs, the drain pan overflows.
  • Dirty coil or filters: Heavy dirt restricts airflow, the coil freezes, and when it thaws the pan cannot keep up.
  • Failed condensate pump: Heads on interior walls often rely on a small pump. When it fails, water backs up fast.
  • Head not level or drain sloped wrong: Common after DIY installs or when a wall bracket shifts over time.
  • Mold and buildup in the drain pan: Slime blocks the pan's outlet even when the line itself is clear.

What to do right now

Turn the split AC off, drape a towel under the head, and move anything valuable out of the drip zone. If water is near outlets or wiring, switch off the breaker. Many leaks are solved with a thorough split AC cleaning that clears the coil, blower wheel, drain pan and line.

Mini-split not cooling, icing up or weak airflow

If your split AC runs but the room will not cool, check the remote first. Make sure it is in Cool mode, not Dry, Fan or Heat, and that the setpoint is below room temperature. Then clean the filters. If it still is not cooling, one of these is likely:

  • Dirty blower wheel or coil: Common on older heads and a major cause of weak airflow and musty smells.
  • Refrigerant leak: Mini-splits often leak at flare connections on the line set. Ice on the copper lines is a classic sign.
  • Outdoor unit problem: A failed fan motor, capacitor or board, or a coil corroded by salt air, stops heat from leaving your home.
  • Sensor or board fault: A bad temperature sensor can make the unit think the room is already cool.

If you see ice on the unit or lines

Turn the system off, or run fan only, until the ice melts. Do not chip at it. Clean the filters, then restart. If it ices up again, it needs a technician to check airflow and refrigerant charge. Our AC not cooling troubleshooting guide walks through the checks in order, and why ACs freeze up explains the ice.

Remote control and zone problems

Not every no-cooling call is a broken AC. Dead batteries, a timer or sleep setting left on, or a remote that no longer pairs with the head can all look like a failure. Try fresh batteries and point the remote directly at the head's receiver.

On multi-zone heat pump systems, one head set to Heat while others are on Cool can cause a mode conflict, and some heads will stop working or blink until the modes match. Wired controllers and Wi-Fi modules can also lose connection. If the unit still ignores the remote after these checks, the receiver or control board may need service.

Noises and smells from your split AC

  • Rattling or buzzing outdoors: Loose panels, debris in the fan, or a failing fan motor or contactor.
  • Squealing or grinding indoors: A worn blower motor bearing or a blower wheel rubbing its housing.
  • Gurgling: Often a partly blocked drain or air in the condensate line.
  • Clicking over and over: Can be an electrical relay or board problem, not just normal expansion noises.
  • Musty or sour smell: Mold and slime inside the blower wheel and coil, very common in humid Oahu homes. A deep clean usually fixes it.
  • Burning smell: Turn the unit and breaker off right away and call for emergency AC repair.

Repair or replace an older split AC?

Most split AC problems are worth repairing, especially drains, sensors, capacitors and fan motors. The decision gets harder on older systems. Very old mini-splits may still run on R-22, which is no longer produced, making refrigerant repairs expensive. Many systems use R-410A, which is being phased down and is expected to get pricier. A failed compressor or main board on an older unit is often the point where replacement makes more sense.

We price both options side by side. A new inverter split AC is typically more efficient, which matters at about 43 cents per kWh on Oahu, and qualifying units can earn instant Hawaii Energy rebates of $400 to $550 per qualifying outdoor unit, subject to program availability. See our split AC installation and Hawaii Energy rebates pages to compare.

Split AC Repair FAQ

A blinking light usually means the unit has detected a fault and is reporting a code. Note the pattern, turn the unit off at the breaker for a few minutes and restart it. If the blinking returns, book a repair so a technician can trace the actual cause.

The most common causes are a clogged condensate line, a dirty coil that froze and thawed, a failed condensate pump, or a head that is not level. Turn it off, catch the water with a towel, and schedule service. A deep cleaning often solves the problem.

You can, and it may point you in the right direction. But codes vary by brand and model, and one code can have several causes. A technician needs to test the system to find the failed part.

Mold and slime grow inside the blower wheel and coil, especially in humid homes. Rinsing filters helps, but the real fix is a professional deep clean of the indoor head. Regular cleaning keeps the smell from coming back.

Check that the remote is in Cool mode with a low setpoint, and clean the filters. If it still is not cooling, the cause may be a refrigerant leak, a dirty coil, or an outdoor fan, capacitor or board problem. Book a diagnostic to find out.

For simple repairs like drains, sensors and capacitors, usually yes. For a major refrigerant leak, a compressor failure or an R-22 system, replacement is often the better value. We give you both prices so you can decide.

Yes. We repair multi-zone systems, including issues with one zone not cooling, mode conflicts, and outdoor unit faults. We check each head and the shared outdoor unit.
