Emergency AC Repair: the short version

3 key points
  • Oahu electricity runs about 43¢ per kWh, 2.3× the U.S. average. A new 12,000 BTU inverter split used 8 hours a day costs about $62 a month; an older unit of the same size draws about twice as much, about $124 a month.
  • Hawaii Energy pays $75 per condenser, up to 2 a year, for a multi-point AC tune-up by a Clean Energy Ally contractor.
  • Hawaii Energy instant rebate: $400-$550 per outdoor unit (condenser) on a qualifying split AC or mini-split, set by size and efficiency and taken off the invoice. A 9,000 or 12,000 BTU unit earns $450 if it is rated 17.2 SEER2 or better, and nothing below that. The work must be done by a Hawaii Energy Clean Energy Ally contractor.

Emergency AC repair across Oahu

AC problems do not keep business hours. Compressors fail on Sunday afternoons, and breakers trip at 2 a.m. Wherever you are, from Kapolei and Ewa Beach to Honolulu, Kailua and the North Shore, call (808) 400-6593 or send an urgent request online at any hour. Requests marked 'AC down right now' reach our team flagged EMERGENCY.

Not every broken AC needs an after-hours visit, and we will tell you that. But when heat is a risk to someone's health, your pets, sensitive equipment or your business, we treat it as the emergency it is. Call (808) 400-6593 and a real person will help you figure out the next step.

When is a broken AC an emergency?

On the Leeward side, where Kapolei and Ewa Beach are often the hottest and driest parts of the island, a closed-up house can heat up fast. Call for emergency service if any of these apply:

  • Kupuna at home: Older adults are more vulnerable to heat and may not notice they are overheating.
  • Infants and young children: Babies cannot cool themselves as well as adults and cannot tell you they are too hot.
  • Medical needs: Someone with heart or breathing conditions, a person recovering from surgery, or medications and equipment that need a cool room.
  • Pets: Dogs, cats, birds and reptiles can overheat quickly in a closed home, especially while you are at work.
  • Server rooms and IT closets: Electronics shut down or fail when temperatures climb, and data loss is expensive.
  • Businesses: Restaurants, clinics, retail stores and offices lose customers, inventory and productivity every hour the AC is down.

When it can probably wait until morning

If everyone at home is healthy, the house is tolerable with fans and open windows, and there are no warning signs like burning smells or water near wiring, a regular appointment is usually fine. The same goes for an AC that still cools but not as well as it should, or one room in a multi-zone split AC that stopped while the others keep running. Book the next available AC repair visit, and call back if things get worse overnight.

Safety first: shut it off and call if you notice these

Some AC failures are more than uncomfortable. If you see or smell any of the following, turn the system off at the thermostat and switch off its breaker. If there is smoke or flame, leave the home and call 911 first.

  • A burning, electrical or melting-plastic smell from vents, the indoor unit or the outdoor unit
  • Water dripping near outlets, light fixtures, electrical panels or the indoor unit's wiring
  • A breaker that trips again right after you reset it
  • Loud buzzing, humming or sparking at the outdoor unit
  • A ceiling that is sagging or stained from a hidden leak

Never do these while you wait

Do not keep resetting a tripping breaker, open electrical panels on the AC, or touch wet wiring. Do not chip ice off a frozen coil. And do not let anyone add refrigerant without finding the leak, because that is not an emergency fix. It is a repeat bill.

What to do while you wait for your technician

A few simple steps can keep your home safer and cooler until we arrive.

Keep people and pets cool

Close blinds and curtains on the sunny side of the house, and move everyone to the coolest room, usually the lowest floor or the side facing the trade winds. Run fans, open windows if the air outside is cooler, and keep water handy. Check on kupuna and kids often. If anyone shows signs of heat stroke, such as confusion, fainting, or hot, dry skin, call 911.

Protect your home from water

If your AC is leaking, turn it off, put towels or a bucket under the drip, and move furniture, electronics and rugs out of the way. For a split AC leaking from the indoor head, a towel draped under the unit catches most of the water. Take a quick photo; it helps us diagnose.

Protect servers and equipment

Shut down non-essential equipment to reduce heat, prop open the server room door if it is safe to do so, and aim a portable fan at the rack. If you have monitoring, keep an eye on temperature alerts and plan a controlled shutdown if it keeps climbing.

How our emergency AC repair works

An emergency call should feel calm and organized, even when your house is hot and stressful. Here is what happens from the moment you pick up the phone, whether you are in a Waikiki high-rise or a single-wall home in Kaneohe.

  • You call. Tell us what is happening, who is at home, and any warning signs like smells, water or tripping breakers.
  • We triage. We walk you through safety steps and simple checks, like the breaker and filter, that sometimes solve it on the spot.
  • We dispatch. A technician heads your way with common parts such as capacitors, contactors, fan motors and drain supplies.
  • We diagnose and quote. You get a clear written price before any repair begins.
  • We fix it or stabilize it. Most emergency calls end with cooling restored. If a major part must be ordered, we talk through temporary cooling options and schedule the final repair.

Emergency AC repair for Oahu businesses

A dead rooftop unit on a Saturday can cost a restaurant its whole night. We handle emergency calls for commercial AC systems, including rooftop package units, split systems and VRF, across Honolulu and the rest of Oahu.

Businesses that cannot afford downtime should look at our commercial maintenance agreements. Scheduled service catches worn parts early, so fewer problems become emergencies.

How to prevent the next AC emergency

Most emergencies we see were building for weeks. A capacitor weakens, a drain slowly clogs, or salt air eats away at a coil until something gives. Coastal homes see corrosion faster, and vog can load up filters in a hurry.

Regular AC maintenance is the simplest protection. Our Comfort Club puts tune-ups and cleaning on a schedule so your system gets checked before the hot months, not after it quits.

Comfort Club membership

Salt air and humidity never take a day off. Neither do we.

Two precision tune-ups and cleanings a year, priority scheduling and member pricing, all for one low monthly price.

We built Universal Air to be the AC company we would want to call: find the real cause, explain the price before we touch anything, and leave your home cooler and cleaner than we found it. If something isn't right, call us directly at (808) 400-6593.

FAQ

Emergency AC Repair FAQ

It depends on where you are on the island, the time of day and how many urgent calls are ahead of yours, so we do not promise a set arrival time. Call (808) 400-6593 and we will tell you honestly what we can do, and whether a regular appointment is the safer, cheaper choice. You can also send an urgent request online at any hour.

Urgent service can cost more than a standard appointment. Either way, you get a written price and approve it before any work begins. If your situation can safely wait, we will tell you.

Turn the system off at the thermostat and shut off its breaker right away. If you see smoke or flames, get everyone out and call 911. Do not turn the AC back on until a licensed technician has inspected it.

It can be. Turn off the AC and, if you can do it safely without touching water, switch off the breaker for that circuit. Keep people and pets away from the wet area and call for emergency service.

Move them to the coolest room, close blinds on the sunny side, run fans, and make sure they drink water regularly. Cool, damp cloths on the neck and wrists help. If they seem confused, faint or stop sweating, call 911.

Yes. We respond to emergency calls for offices, restaurants, retail, clinics and IT rooms, and we service split, rooftop package and VRF systems. Ask about maintenance agreements to reduce future downtime.

Many emergency repairs, like failed capacitors, contactors, fan motors and clogged drains, can be fixed on the spot. If a major part has to be ordered, we will stabilize the situation where possible and schedule the repair as soon as the part arrives.
