Kaimuki homes were built for breezes
Kaimuki is one of Honolulu's older residential neighborhoods. The tract was subdivided in 1898, the streetcar reached Waialae Avenue in 1903, and many of the bungalows and cottages on its grid of numbered avenues date to the 1920s and '30s. Those homes relied on high ceilings, big windows, deep eaves and a covered lanai to stay comfortable.
That design still works on a breezy day. The trouble is the rest of the year: still, humid afternoons, a neighbor's second story now blocking the wind, and a bedroom that holds the day's heat until midnight. Kaimuki sits on drier ground than the wet valleys nearby, so the job here is usually heat, not mold.
