Paying for a New AC on Oahu

A new air conditioner is a big purchase. Here is how Oahu homeowners bring the cost down: Hawaii Energy rebates, a written quote you can compare line by line, and phasing the work one zone at a time. If you need to spread out payments, ask when you request your quote.

Start With a Written Quote

Ask for a written quote that lists the equipment, the labor, any permits and any Hawaii Energy rebate line by line, so you can compare it with other bids. See typical Oahu installed ranges in our AC cost guide or answer a few questions in the instant estimate.

Hawaii Energy Rebates Lower the Price

Hawaii Energy pays $400 to $550 per qualifying split AC or mini-split outdoor unit, set by size and SEER2 rating. A 9,000 or 12,000 BTU unit earns $450 if it is rated 17.2 SEER2 or better. The program also pays $1,250 for a qualifying central AC retrofit and $75 per qualifying AC tune-up, subject to program availability through June 30, 2027. Except for ENERGY STAR window units, the work must be done by a Hawaii Energy Clean Energy Ally contractor. See Hawaii Energy rebates for the full tier table.

Phase the Work One Zone at a Time

Ductless split systems can be added one room at a time. You can start with the bedrooms or the hottest room and add zones later, which spreads the spending over more than one budget cycle. Rebates are counted per outdoor unit, so separate single-zone systems can each earn their own rebate, while one multi-zone system earns one.

Lower Bills Help Pay It Back

Oahu residential electricity costs about 43¢ per kWh, roughly 2.3 times the U.S. average, so a high-efficiency system can noticeably lower your monthly bill. Our guide to lowering your AC electric bill shows where the savings come from.

Claim the Hawaii Energy rebate ($400 to $550 per qualifying split AC outdoor unit, or $1,250 for a qualifying central AC retrofit), compare written quotes line by line, and consider adding a ductless system one zone at a time.

No. The federal 25C credit expired at the end of 2025, so for 2026 projects on Oahu the Hawaii Energy rebate is the main program. Rebates are subject to program availability and require a Clean Energy Ally contractor.

Phasing spreads the spending over time rather than lowering the total. Each separate single-zone system can still earn its own Hawaii Energy outdoor-unit rebate, subject to program rules.
