Salt Lake, Aliamanu and Foster Village: warm, dry and close to town
Salt Lake takes its name from a real lake. Hawaiians once gathered salt from its shores, and in 1966 the lake was filled in, except for a pond that remains on the Honolulu Country Club golf course. Developers built the neighborhood from the 1960s on, filling the land around Aliamanu Crater with condos, townhomes and houses.
This side of Honolulu is dry and sunny. The airport, just makai, averages only about 16 inches of rain a year, and afternoons here can feel much hotter than in the valleys across town. Homes and condos take full sun on their west faces, and the job for most AC here is steady heat, month after month.
