Waipio Homes by Era: Crestview, Gentry and the Townhomes
Waipio grew in two main waves. Crestview came first, with homes built mostly in the mid-to-late 1960s and original two-car carports. Tom Gentry's Waipio Gentry followed, with single-family homes built mostly from the late 1970s into the mid-1980s, plus more than a dozen condo and townhome projects.
Almost none of these homes were designed around central air. Back then, AC in Honolulu-area homes was the exception, not the rule. Today most Waipio owners want it, and the house decides how it gets done: ductless split AC for most, a new through-wall unit for some, and careful planning around small yards for nearly everyone.
Waipio sits between the hot Ewa plain and the cooler central plateau, so afternoons run warm and evenings stay humid. Your split AC ends up doing two jobs: cooling on sunny afternoons and pulling moisture out of the air at night. A right-sized inverter system handles both better than an old wall unit that only knows on and off.
