Sun, Salt and a Long Cooling Season on the Waianae Coast
The Waianae Range blocks much of the rain the trade winds carry, so Nanakuli, Maili, Waianae and Makaha stay dry and sunny most of the year. The coast faces west, which means the hottest part of the day lands squarely on your walls, windows and condenser.
On still afternoons, a house can soak up heat for hours and give it back all night. That's hard on older AC units that were never sized for it. With Oahu power averaging about 43¢ per kWh, an inefficient unit running into the evening shows up fast on the Hawaiian Electric bill.
