AC Repair: the short version

3 key points
  • Oahu electricity runs about 43¢ per kWh, 2.3× the U.S. average. A new 12,000 BTU inverter split used 8 hours a day costs about $62 a month; an older unit of the same size draws about twice as much, about $124 a month.
  • Hawaii Energy pays $75 per condenser, up to 2 a year, for a multi-point AC tune-up by a Clean Energy Ally contractor.
  • Hawaii Energy instant rebate: $400-$550 per outdoor unit (condenser) on a qualifying split AC or mini-split, set by size and efficiency and taken off the invoice. A 9,000 or 12,000 BTU unit earns $450 if it is rated 17.2 SEER2 or better, and nothing below that. The work must be done by a Hawaii Energy Clean Energy Ally contractor.

AC repair on Oahu, done right the first time

Air conditioning is not a luxury on Oahu anymore. About 70% of Honolulu homes had AC by 2019, up from roughly 14% in 1970, and when yours stops working on a still, humid afternoon, the whole house feels it. Universal Air Hawaii provides AC repair across Oahu, from Kapolei and Ewa Beach to Mililani, Honolulu, Hawaii Kai and the Windward side.

We repair every common system type on the island: ductless split AC and mini-splits, central air, window and wall units, and condo systems in high-rises. If your problem is a ductless unit specifically, our split AC repair page goes deeper on blinking lights, leaks and error codes.

Common AC problems we repair in Honolulu homes

Most calls start with one of these symptoms. Each has a short list of likely causes, and a good technician checks them in order instead of throwing parts at the problem.

AC not cooling or blowing warm air

The fan runs but the air feels room temperature. Common causes include a failed capacitor or contactor at the outdoor unit, a condenser fan that stopped spinning, a dirty or corroded outdoor coil, or low refrigerant from a leak. On Oahu, salt air speeds up corrosion on coils and electrical parts, especially in homes close to the ocean.

Short cycling

The system turns on, runs a few minutes, then shuts off, over and over. That can point to an oversized unit, a clogged filter, low refrigerant, a thermostat in a bad spot, or an overheating compressor. Short cycling wears parts out fast and leaves the house clammy, because the AC never runs long enough to pull humidity out of the air.

Frozen evaporator coil

Ice on the indoor coil or the copper lines usually means restricted airflow or low refrigerant. Dirty filters, a clogged coil and a failing blower motor are the usual suspects. Turn the system off or set it to fan only so the ice can melt, and never chip at it.

Breaker keeps tripping

A breaker that trips once may be a fluke. One that trips again is telling you something: a failing compressor, a shorted fan motor, a bad capacitor, or loose, corroded wiring. Do not keep resetting it. Leave it off and call us.

Water leaking indoors

Your AC pulls a lot of water out of Oahu air. When the condensate drain clogs with algae and slime, or a coil freezes and then thaws, that water ends up on your floor, wall or ceiling. Shut the system off and put a towel down until we clear the drain and find the cause.

Strange noises

Grinding, squealing, banging or a loud buzz from the outdoor unit usually means a motor bearing, a loose fan blade or an electrical part on its way out. Catching a noisy part early is almost always cheaper than replacing what it damages when it fails.

Check these three things before you call

Some no-cooling calls end in five minutes with a simple fix. Try these first. If none of them solves it, you have already saved your technician time.

  • Thermostat: Confirm it is set to Cool, the setpoint is below room temperature, and the batteries are fresh. On a split AC, check that the remote is in Cool mode, not Dry or Fan.
  • Breaker: Look for a tripped AC breaker in your panel and any disconnect switch near the outdoor unit. Reset it once. If it trips again, stop and call.
  • Filter: A clogged filter chokes airflow and can freeze the coil. Replace it, or rinse the washable filters on a split AC, and let the system rest before restarting.

How our AC repair diagnostic works

We start by listening. You know how your system has been acting, and details like when it started, what it sounds like and whether it gets worse in the afternoon help us narrow things down fast.

  • We check the thermostat or remote, filters and airflow at the indoor unit.
  • At the outdoor unit, we test capacitors, contactors, fan motor and wiring, and inspect the coil for corrosion and dirt.
  • We measure refrigerant pressures and temperatures to confirm the system is charged and moving heat correctly.
  • We check the condensate drain and pan for clogs and overflow risk.
  • You get a clear explanation and a written price before any repair begins. You decide.

R-410A systems and the refrigerant change

Most Oahu systems installed in the last 15 years or so run on R-410A. New equipment now uses lower-impact A2L refrigerants such as R-454B and R-32, and R-410A production is being phased down. Your existing R-410A system is still legal to run and repair, but service refrigerant is expected to get pricier over time.

That makes a real diagnosis more important than ever. Refrigerant does not get used up. If your system is low, it has a leak, and adding refrigerant without finding the leak means paying for the same problem again. We locate the leak, explain your options and give you the numbers.

Repair or replace your AC? A clear way to decide

We will never push a new system when a repair makes sense. But at roughly 43 cents per kWh on Oahu, about 2.3 times the U.S. average, running an old, inefficient AC costs real money every month. Here is how we help you weigh it.

  • Age: Systems past about 12 to 15 years, especially near the ocean, often have more failures ahead.
  • Repeat refrigerant leaks: Recharging R-410A again and again adds up quickly.
  • Major component failure: A failed compressor or outdoor coil on an older unit is often the tipping point.
  • Comfort: Rooms that never cool or a house that always feels sticky may mean the system was sized wrong from the start.
  • Rebates: Hawaii Energy offers instant rebates on qualifying new systems, subject to program availability. See our Hawaii Energy rebates guide.

FAQ

AC Repair FAQ

The most common causes are a failed capacitor or contactor, a stopped condenser fan, a dirty or corroded coil, or low refrigerant from a leak. Check your thermostat setting, breaker and filter first. If those are fine, schedule a diagnostic so a technician can test the system.

Signs include warm air, ice on the copper lines or indoor coil, a hissing sound, and longer run times with higher electric bills. Low refrigerant always means a leak somewhere. A technician should find and fix the leak, not just add more.

Yes. Turn it off or switch it to fan only and let the ice melt completely, which can take a few hours. Replace a dirty filter while you wait. If it freezes again after restarting, call for repair.

Often, yes, especially for electrical parts like capacitors, contactors and fan motors. For an older system with a major refrigerant leak or a failed compressor, replacement usually makes more sense. We give you both options with prices so you can decide.

Yes. Ductless split AC is the most common system on Oahu, and we repair single-zone and multi-zone mini-splits, including wall, ceiling cassette and ducted heads. Our split AC repair page covers the details.

Repeated trips usually point to a failing compressor, a shorted motor, a bad capacitor or corroded wiring, all of which are common in Oahu's salt air. Leave the breaker off and call a licensed technician. Resetting it again and again can damage the system or create a fire risk.

We serve all of Oahu, including Honolulu, Kapolei, Ewa Beach, Mililani, Pearl City, Aiea, Waipahu, Kailua, Kaneohe and Hawaii Kai. Book online or call (808) 400-6593 to schedule.
